Do I need a vignette to drive on Austrian motorways?

Yes, all vehicles up to 3.5 t must display a valid Autobahnvignette on motorways and expressways. Digital vignettes are also available via the ASFINAG app.

What is the speed limit on Austrian motorways?

The general limit is 130 km/h, though some sections have variable limits displayed on overhead signs.

Are winter tyres mandatory in Austria?

Winter tyres are situationally mandatory when roads are icy or snow-covered. The requirement applies from 1 November to 15 April on certain roads.

Which alpine passes are typically closed in winter?

The Großglockner Hochalpenstraße, Silvretta Hochalpenstraße, and several other high passes close between October/November and May/June.

Can I use my EU driving licence in Austria?

Yes, all EU/EEA driving licences are fully valid in Austria.

What is the blood alcohol limit for drivers?

The general limit is 0.5 g/L (0.05%). For drivers with less than 2 years of experience and professional drivers, the limit is 0.1 g/L.

Are there tolls on Austrian motorways beyond the vignette?

Yes, several routes have additional section tolls (Streckenmaut), including the Brenner motorway (A13) and Tauern motorway (A10).

What emergency number should I call in Austria?

112 is the pan-European emergency number. For roadside assistance, ÖAMTC can be reached on 120 and ARBÖ on 123.

Is it legal to use a radar detector in Austria?

No, radar detectors and jammers are illegal in Austria and can result in significant fines.

Where can I find real-time traffic information?

ASFINAG's website and app provide live traffic and roadworks data for the Austrian motorway network.
